Welcome to Maine Taxpayers United

We are proud to represent the interests of Maine citizens in the Legislature.  MTU is the only organization which represents those Maine people who work, or have worked, for a living. The number of special interest groups which lobby legislators runs in the hundreds.

The Peoples' Veto of the Beer, Wine Tax passes in referendum 64% to 36%.

The Fed Up With Taxes Coalition was successful in bringing the Peoples' Veto of LD 2247 to referendum and obtaining approval of Maine voters on November 4th. Maine Taxpayers United assisted in collecting signatures and distributing campaign materials throughout the State.

Unfortunately, and incredibly, many Maine voters re-elected legislators who passed this "Midnight Tax' last April 15th. The 124th Legislature will convene in early December with Democratic majorities in both the House and the Senate, which means that the Maine economy will continue to be suppressed by a tax burden which is among the heaviest amongst all the other states.

We thank all those candidates for public office who support Our Mission and who took on the arduous task of campaigning. Their example of good citizenship is truly inspirational.

Next year MTU will support the three citizens Initiatives which have been sponsored by the Maine Heritage Policy Center and Maine Leads.

The Health Insurance Initiative would allow Maine citizens, businesses and groups to purchase health insurance outside of the State in a free market . Competition among the carriers would provide better products at costs which are a fraction of  those which Maine citizens must bear today.  In neighborring New Hampshire, where competition is allowed, the cost of similar health insurance products is approximately half that of  Maine's.

These exorbitant costs effect not only citizens, but also municipal budgets, all of which contain the expenses for running their school departments. Teacher's salaries and benefits are the largest expenses within municipal budgets today.  In school departments, these expenses consume anywhere from 60% to 80% of the budget.  We expect that the Health Insurance Initiative could reduce school budgets by as much as 20%.  We hope to have actual numbers available here soon

Accordingly, Maine Taxpayers United is hosting an informational meeting which will focus upon the health Insurance Initiative. The public is cordially invited to join us at

Governor's Restaurant in Lewiston on Saturday morning, November 22nd.

Our program will begin at 9 AM, will not exceed an hour and a half, and will feature speakers who will explain how this Initiative will benefit Maine citizens.  Admission is free.

If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Jack Wibby at jwibby@maine.rr.com, or (207) 657-7737.
